Concord, New Hampshire, United States (AHN) - Gay advocates in the Granite State ushered in the new year with weddings at the state Capitol on Friday, when New Hampshire's same-sex marriage law took effect.
The Freedom to Marry Coalition and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation led celebrations in Concord on New Year's Eve, counting down the minutes until the state performed its first gay marriages just after midnight.
New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed a same-sex marriage bill into law early June despite his opposition to gay marriages and only after state lawmakers had complied with his requirement to include provisions in the legislation protecting religious institutions. The state Senate had voted 14-10 and the state House 198-176 to pass the measure.
Lawmakers had negotiated to include an amendment exempting religious institutions from participating in marriage-related activities that are against their beliefs.
A proof-of-principle study has demonstrated that it is possible to engineer human blood stem cells into cells that can target and kill HIV-infected cells. The result is the equivalent of a genetic vaccine which is not only good news in the fight against HIV - the process could also be used against a range of chronic viral diseases.
In the study researchers from the UCLA AIDS Institute and colleagues took the “killer” T cells that help fight infection, known as CD8 cytotoxic T lymphocytes, from an HIV-infected individual. The researchers then identified the molecule known as the T-cell receptor – the molecule that guides the T cell in recognizing and killing HIV-infected cells. Although these cells are able to destroy HIV-infected cells, they do not exist in enough quantities to clear the virus from the body. So the researchers cloned the receptor and genetically engineered human blood stem cells, then placed the stem cells into human thymus tissue that had been implanted in mice, allowing them to study the reaction in a living organism.

Two years is really only a small fragment of time. However a lot can happen in two years. You could meet new people, visit new places or experience things you never have before. For The True Fellowship however this is an incredible amount of time. Given the circumstances under which we have to operate, and the pressures we feel from those outside of the group, The True Fellowship fights every day for its right to exist, and today we are able to reflect on the strength of the members of the group, and recognise the strides we have taken to get us to where we are today.
It's at this time of year I like to take a moment to remind people of how The True Fellowship was formed. These were important events and they define who we are. There are only a handful of members that remain who were around at this time, and many new members have joined who have no idea of the circumstances which brought us together.
Two years ago on December 7th, 2007 a group of people created a group that had no name. Many know that TTF was formed out of members of EMP, but people forget that it was an arguably crippling blow to EMP at the time. EMP's membership was halved over a dispute which attempted to strip members of their freedom to, essentially talk to whomever they wanted. EMP tried, as it still does, to basically control the thoughts and feelings of its members. EMP's membership fell from around 100, to around 50 in a number of hours. Many of those who left joined together with one goal in mind. To provide a chat room where people were free to be themselves, and free to enjoy the company of others.
This was in itself going to be a challenge. EMP was well known for doing anything they could to prevent other gay groups and gay chat rooms from forming on Stickam. Their central belief is that there is only room on Stickam for one gay chat room. The True Fellowship had at its heart a group of people determined to see that Stickam will always have a gay friendly room that welcomed all who chose to use it, while maintaining a safe and friendly environment for all.
I like to think that for the most part we've succeeded in doing this, although we recognise that you cannot please everyone. We try to be tolerant and we try to be respectful, and we try to encourage others to share these ideals, even if it's not possible all of the time. We are the largest gay group on Stickam with the largest amount of active members. Do not be fooled by the room numbers, which merely reflect EMP's desperation to be the number one chat room, by using tools which are in fact illegal. We are the most popular gay chat room on Stickam with consistent loyal users who return time after time.
We are the most stable group on Stickam, because we recognise the importance of the members, and we are prepared to admit when a mistake has been made. With this, TTF has grown and adapted to its ever changing environment, and it will continue to do so as we begin to take steps that will see TTF's appeal grow. We've had nearly 1000 applications for membership since we formed, and with recent changes to the site, we now allow more people than ever to join the community.
Of course we cannot mention the last year of The True Fellowship without mentioning the success of our first annual meet in San Francisco. Rumours of previous Stickam meets had left concerns in the minds of many that a TTF meet would come to the same inevitable conclusion, but we proved to people that we can gather and have good, safe fun that everyone involved can enjoy. Those who attended look back fondly on the meet and we look forward to bringing you details of next years meet in the New Year.
All in all, it has never been a better time to be a member of The True Fellowship. We've had the rough and the smooth, the good times and the bad times, but we continue to push forward, learn from our mistakes, and grow to be bigger and better.
Happy Birthday TTF, and thank you to all of those who have made the last two years unforgettable. Many of you have had a massive impact on me personally, and I know that many others can say the same.
Previously we were goign to be keeping the old skins for those who wanted to use them, however there have been a number of technical changes that are not compatible with the old skin. We now only have two skins available, the standard skin, and the discreet skin for those who don't wish to see the rainbow in the background for whatever reason. You can change to this discreet skin here.
The new skin provides better integration with the site and the profiling features recently added. You may have noticed many of the avatars have disappeared. You will need to reset your avatar in the community section of the site if you have not yet done so. This can be found here.
Please post any bugs you may find below, and we will strive to fix them as soon as possible.

The ban, first implemented in 1987 and codified into law by Congress in 1993, prevented non-U.S. citizens who were HIV-positive from traveling or immigrating to the United States unless the Department of Homeland Security granted them a waiver.
Congress passed the policy reversal last summer under the leadership of Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (D-OR) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA); former President George W. Bush signed it into law, but the Administration was unable to finalize the change before his term ended.
The new regulation eliminates any travel and immigration restrictions that are tied to a person's HIV status. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) put the wheels of change in motion in late June by publishing the proposed regulation to the federal register, which triggered a 45-day public comment period. HHS has now sent the final change to the Office of Management and Budget for approval, but the source said HHS would not be able to fully implement the new regulation for another 60 days following the president's announcement.
The Ryan White CARE Act, named after an Indiana teenager who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion in 1984, was originally passed in 1990 and has since been extended three times.

With this in mind, we frequently assess the council and look to see where we can improve ourselves. Part of this process usually involves adding new members to the council, to ensure the dynamics of the council remains fresh and vitalised. An active council has to ability to motivate the entire group, and in one massive step, we collectivly move together.
It is with this in mind, and after much consideration, that we are thrilled to announce the following additions to the council.

This is from the EMP forum....
As some of you may already be aware, Stickam has decided in all its homophobic wisdom to designate any word or phrase beginning with the letters "EMP" in a username to be offensive language and therefore unusable. The primary effect of this is that we can no longer designate ourselves by having the EMP tag at the front of our usernames. As such, all references to EMP have been changed to E. This has the added benefit of being harder to ban, since it is doubtful Stickam will make it "offensive" to use any word beginning with a specific letter.
The secondary effect of this, is that any other word beginning with EMP is also banned, and this includes the word Emperor. I've held this title for somewhere around three years now, and I'm pretty upset about having to discard it - but this is the situation I'm faced with. As such, my title has converted to Overlord, and until I can convince Stickam that they have made a hideous error, it will stay that way.
In the near future we hope to have another symbol for non-mods so as to ensure that our names all stay grouped together in the user pane. Stay tuned for further updates.
Gay marriage is to be permitted in the US state of Maine after a bill was passed by both houses of the state's legislature and signed by the governor.
Maine will be the fifth US state to allow gay marriage, after Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa and Vermont. A number of other states, including New Hampshire and New York, are also due to consider proposals to legalise it. Earlier this week, Washington DC's city council passed a law to recognise gay marriages performed in other states.
